Today there are over 5 million personal identity verification (PIV) cards in use. These cards are mostly used to provide strong identity authentication in order to safeguard entry to federal facilities. Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 was issued in 2004, pre-dating the widespread adoption of mobile computing devices across the workforce. However, with the current pervasive use of mobile computing devices, an alternative and/or supplemental use case to PIV cards has emerged.
